Networking
OSI Model — the 7 layers
The standard mental model of networking. Layer 2 vs Layer 3
Layer 2 moves frames inside a local network using MAC addresses (switching); Layer 3 routes packets between networks using IP addresses (routing). A 'Layer 3 switch' does both — switching locally while routing between VLANs.
Switch
The device that connects wired devices in a building and forwards traffic only where it needs to go. Managed switches add VLANs, PoE, monitoring, and security controls.
Router
The device that connects different networks — your office to the internet, or site to site — deciding the best path for each packet.
VLAN — Virtual LAN
A way to slice one physical network into isolated segments — cameras on one, phones on another, guests on a third — so traffic and threats cannot wander between them.
IP Address / DHCP / DNS
An IP address identifies a device on a network. DHCP hands out those addresses automatically. DNS translates names like xotavo.com into addresses machines can reach. When 'the internet is down,' it is very often just DNS.
NAT — Network Address Translation
Lets many devices share one public internet address — the router rewrites addresses on the way through, which is why your office of two hundred devices looks like one address from outside.
PoE — Power over Ethernet
Delivering electrical power through the same network cable as data — how modern phones, cameras, access points, and access control are powered without separate electrical drops.
SD-WAN
Software-defined wide-area networking: intelligently steering traffic across multiple internet connections (fiber, cable, Starlink) for performance and automatic failover, replacing rigid legacy circuits.
VPN — Virtual Private Network

LLM — Large Language Model
The engine behind modern AI assistants: a neural network trained on enormous amounts of text until it can understand and generate language. Claude, GPT, Gemini, and Grok are all LLMs — different makes of the same kind of engine.
Token
The unit AI models actually read — roughly three-quarters of a word. Pricing, speed, and memory limits are all measured in tokens, which is why long documents cost more to process than short ones.
Context Window
The model's working memory: how much text it can consider at once — your question, the conversation so far, and any documents you attached. Outside the window, the model simply cannot see. Bigger windows mean whole contracts and codebases in one pass.
Prompt
Everything you feed the model to get a response — the question, the instructions, the examples, the attached material. The single biggest factor in output quality that is under your control.
Prompt Engineering
The craft of writing prompts that work: being specific about the task, audience, and format; providing examples of good output; giving the model a role; and breaking big asks into steps. The difference between a vague answer and a usable one is usually the prompt, not the model.
System Prompt
Standing instructions the model receives before every conversation — its role, rules, and boundaries. When a business deploys an assistant like our Tavo, the system prompt is where its identity, knowledge limits, and manners are defined.
Prompt Chaining / Sequences
Solving complex work as a pipeline of prompts, where each step's output feeds the next — summarize, then extract, then draft, then review. Reliable AI workflows are built from sequences, not one heroic mega-prompt.
Hallucination
When a model states something false with total confidence — a fabricated citation, an invented spec. The cure is grounding: retrieval (RAG), citations, and workflows where claims get verified before they get used.
Fine-Tuning
Additional training that teaches an existing model your patterns — tone, formats, domain language. Compare RAG, which feeds documents at question time; most businesses need RAG, not fine-tuning.
RAG — Retrieval-Augmented Generation

Embeddings / Vector Search

Claude (Anthropic)
Strengths: careful reasoning, long-document work, writing quality, coding, and a large context window — strong where accuracy and nuance matter. Weaknesses: fewer consumer bells and whistles than some rivals, and its caution can read as reserve. Widely used for professional and technical work.
ChatGPT (OpenAI)
Strengths: the largest ecosystem — plugins, integrations, images, voice — and broad general capability; the default many people learned first. Weaknesses: quality varies across its many modes, and the consumer product optimizes engagement as much as rigor.
Microsoft Copilot
Strengths: lives inside Word, Excel, Outlook, and Teams with enterprise governance — the lowest-friction way to bring AI to office work, and its tenant permissions are done right. Weaknesses: the famous name is not automatically the best brain. Copilot layers licensed OpenAI models behind Microsoft's retrieval and guardrails, and in practice its in-app answers often trail the frontier assistants in depth and reasoning. Deserves evaluation, not default trust — pick it for the integration, not the intelligence.
Grok (xAI)
Strengths: real-time awareness through the X platform, fast iteration, and fewer topic restrictions. Weaknesses: the looser guardrails cut both ways, and its knowledge integrations skew toward its home platform. Improving quickly.
Gemini (Google)
Strengths: deep Google Workspace and search integration, strong multimodal abilities, very large context windows. Weaknesses: uneven consistency across its product tiers, and the best capabilities sit behind the paid versions.
Sesame
A voice-AI company whose conversational speech models produce strikingly human phone-quality voices — natural pacing, emotion, interruptions. Relevant to business: this class of technology is what will answer phones, qualify callers, and staff after-hours lines in the near term.
How to choose an assistant
Ignore the brand and test your actual work: your documents, your questions, your formats. Model quality shifts every few months, so the honest answer is benchmarks plus your own trials — and for business systems, grounding in your data (RAG) matters more than which engine sits underneath. Good Bots vs Bad Bots
Not all crawlers deserve the same door policy. Good bots — Googlebot, Bingbot, and the AI crawlers — identify themselves honestly, obey your robots.txt, fetch politely, and bring you visibility in return. Bad bots impersonate browsers or even Googlebot, ignore robots.txt, hammer servers, scrape prices and content wholesale, probe for vulnerabilities, and stuff credentials. The mistake many businesses make is blocking everything: it stops the couriers along with the burglars, and quietly removes you from search results and AI answers alike.
Telling Crawlers Apart
Three checks separate real crawlers from imposters. First, the user-agent string — legitimate bots declare a name and a URL explaining themselves. Second, verification: the major crawlers publish their official IP ranges and support reverse-DNS checks, so a 'Googlebot' arriving from a random address is a fake by definition. Third, behavior: real crawlers respect robots.txt and crawl at a polite pace; fakes ignore rules and spike traffic. Modern firewalls and services like Cloudflare do this verification automatically — letting verified good bots through, challenging imposters, and blocking abusers — which is exactly how we configure it.
llms.txt
An emerging standard: a plain-text briefing at yoursite.com/llms.txt telling AI systems what your business is, does, and offers — authoritative facts in machine-friendly form.
